History of Cardamom intertwined with the Vettikuzhiyil Family

Cardamom is arguably one of the oldest spices known to man. It was first discovered as produce of wild plants found in the Western Ghats in Kerala’s rainfed high ranges. It is said that the spice has been in use for four millennia and was traded with much of the known world in those days. Organized cardamom plantations came up during the British period and after independence, it was taken up by traditional farming communities and families in the region. Much of the high ranges of the hills in Kerala came under organized spice plantations by Syrian-Christian families in Kerala.

Elettaria Cart Cardamom comes to you from the house of Vettikuzhiyil – a family of traditional planters based in the nature endowed high ranges of Idukki in Kerala, India. Here, cardamom has been planted and harvested by over three generations of Spice planters spread over the last 80 years. Their combined experience in farming high-quality cardamom has resulted in some of the world’s best cardamom – brought to you directly through our site – Elettaria Cart which presents to you, premium quality cardamom and other spices straight from our farms.

The Vettikuzhiyil house had its origins in a small town called Palai in the southern State of Kerala, India, with its historical and social culture drawn from the Syrian Christian tradition and value system. In the early 30’s family migrated to Kattappana, the Idukki district which is famous for the production of spices.
